Plumes of dust and rubble plummeted into the river and mountainside in south-west China, after a newly opened bridge collapsed.

Video of the Hongqi Bridge collapsing in Sichuan province on Tuesday (local time) was shared across social media, showing a thick cloud of dust as pieces of the bridge fell.

No casualties were reported.

Authorities had closed the newly opened 758-metre-long bridge linking Sichuan and Tibet after cracks appeared.

According to the Guardian, a landslide caused part of the bridge to collapse.

The highway that the bridge is part of runs through a seismically active part of China, which was devastated by the 2008 Sichuan earthquake that killed 70,000 people.
