A foil boarder in Western Australia has managed to escape unscathed after being knocked into the water by a shark.

Surf cameras on the south-west coast's Prevelly Beach captured Andy McDonald out for his daily surf shortly before 6pm Monday (local time) when he was suddenly falling into the water about 50m from the shore.

"All of a sudden, just bash! Like a freight train hitting me and then it shot me, exploded me up into the air," McDonald told 9News.

"There was just shark all around me, it just felt like I was on top of the shark."

A bite taken out of Andy McDonald's foilboard.

The shark took a decent chomp out of the board, centimetres away from where his feet were.

The 61-year-old said he was panicking as he was "punching and kicking it" with all his might.

His friend Neil Mattinson rushed to help and asked if he was injured.

"I asked him if he was injured but at that point he was so shocked and adrenalised he didn't even know if he was injured," he said.

Mattison then paddled with him to safety.

McDonald described himself as "incredibly lucky" that he lived to tell the tale.

Officers from the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development said they were monitoring the situation.
