A local state of emergency has been declared for the Canterbury region.

MetService has renewed weather warnings across central and southern New Zealand, including three red-level strong wind warnings in Canterbury, Wellington and Wairarapa south of Carterton for tomorrow.

"The state of local emergency will ensure local Civil Defence have access to the emergency powers they need to respond and support emergency services during this event," Civil Defence Minister Mark Mitchell says.

Five homes have been destroyed by fire in Kaikōura, with multiple blazes across the country fanned by high winds.

Speaker 'taking advice' after Te Pati Māori MPs burn bill outside Parliament

The Speaker of the House is "taking advice" after two Te Pati Māori MPs burnt a copy of a Government bill outside Parliament yesterday, calling the act "the dumbest thing you could possibly do".

Te Pati Māori shared a video of co-leader Debbie Ngarewa-Packer and MP Tākuta Ferris last night, in which they set fire to a copy of the Marine and Coastal Area Amendment Bill.

"We send this bill into the hand of Mahuika [the goddess of fire]," Ferris said in te reo.
