Emergency services are responding to a serious crash involving a car and a truck at State Highway 1 at Brynderwyn early this morning.
Motorists were advised to "expect delays and take an alternative route if possible" as traffic controls were in place.
"Emergency services are expected to be at the scene for quite some time," a police spokesperson said.
An investigation was underway to determine the cause of the crash, which happened shortly after 3am.
Police were also called to a separate two-vehicle crash on State Highway 28/Whites Rd in Putaruru, Bay of Plenty around 5.20am.
The road was closed at both ends and diversions were in place at the State Highway 1 intersection, and the State Highway 5 intersection.
St John said it sent three ambulances, two rapid response vehicles and two helicopters to the scene.
"Five patients were assessed at the scene, with two patients, both in a critical condition, airlifted to Waikato Hospital (by helicopter) and the remaining three patients, all in a moderate condition, transported to Waikato Hospital," a St John spokesperson said.
Motorists were also asked to avoid the area where possible and expect delays.
