'One good result isn't enough': Liam Lawson on his F1 future

Liam Lawson appears to be hitting his stride in Formula 1 at just the right time as he pushes to secure his future on the grid.

The 23-year-old Kiwi endured a tough start to the season after being dropped by Red Bull just two races in. But after a slow adjustment at sister team Racing Bulls, Lawson has found consistency, highlighted by a career-best fifth place at the last Grand Prix in Azerbaijan.

It was his third points finish in the last five events — a run that's kept Lawson sitting in 13th place in the Driver's Championship Standings.

Speaking to media in Singapore, Lawson said small changes within the team had helped him turn things around after a tough start to the year.

"I think little details here and there, but we definitely found some things midway through the season to make me comfortable in the car," he said. "Probably around Austria was the turning point in terms of results coming in."

"The pace has been good since the start. It was just about putting it all together. That’s what’s clicked recently, but I know how quickly it can change in this sport."

Lawson's early-season demotion from Red Bull was a tough blow, but it hasn’t stopped him from producing strong performances.

"It's something that maybe I'll look back on more when the season is done," Lawson said on the decision.

"I thought that about the summer break, having some time to reflect on it, but in the end I didn't think too much about it.

"Naturally, my brain goes there sometimes, and I think about it a little bit, but we have so much going on."

Red Bull is expected to decide in the coming weeks over who will drive for the team’s two outfits in 2026.

Though a return to the senior Red Bull squad looks unlikely, retaining his place at Racing Bulls remains very much on the table if he continues to deliver consistent points.

"We're in a programme that's very high pressure," Lawson said. "It's always been like that, and we'll continue to have that pressure through the year until a decision comes,"

"The message to us is to perform - and the better we perform, the better chance we have at staying in the sport."

For now, Lawson says his focus is on keeping Racing Bulls ahead of Aston Martin and chasing down Williams for fifth in the Constructors' Championship.

"As much as Baku was a great weekend, one good result isn’t enough," he said. "We need to keep this consistency going."

"Every time I get in the car, I’m just focused on extracting everything I can."

The 2025 Formula 1 season will continue this weekend at the Singapore Grand Prix in Marina Bay.
