Wind warning for Auckland Harbour Bridge, gales for Wairarapa

Auckland Harbour Bridge.

Commuters in Auckland are being warned to expect speed and lane reductions, as well as possible closures, on the Harbour Bridge due to high winds.

MetService had advised the NZ Transport Agency that some gusts could potentially reach between 75 and 85km/h between 9am and 2pm.

"Speed restrictions and lane reductions are likely, while temporary full closures may be required," the agency said.

"Motorists are advised to drive to the conditions and pay attention to electronic message boards on the motorway, which will advise if any lane closures and reduced speed limits are required.

"If there is potential for sudden and high wind gusts on the bridge, lowering the speed limit gives motorists time to react and take more care."

It comes as MetService lifted most of its weather warnings issued yesterday for a large patch of the South Island and the lower North Island – however, some remain in place.

Northwest gales were expected to affect parts of Wairarapa and the Tararua District this morning.

An orange strong wind warning was issued for the region for four hours from 8am to midday.

Severe gale northwesterlies gusting at 120km/h in exposed places were expected.

MetService said damage to trees, powerlines, and unsecured structures was possible.

"Driving may be difficult, especially for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles.

"Prepare your property by securing items that can be picked up by strong winds. Drive cautiously."

There were also several road snowfall warnings issued in the South Island for Crown Range Road, Milford Road (SH94), and Porters Pass (SH73).

Meanwhile helicopter crews have joined the response to an uncontained vegetation fire burning in Canterbury.

Around 30 firefighters worked through the night at the 38ha scene in Southbridge, battling strong wind gusts.

The morning's headlines in 90 seconds, including an injury blow for the Black Ferns, the main suspect in Madeleine McCann’s disappearance is out of jail, and self driving cars are here. (Source: 1News)
