Christchurch police shooting: Man charged over family-harm incident

Police at the scene of the fatal incident in Christchurch's Bryndwr.

A man has been charged after an incident that led to a fatal police shooting in Christchurch last month.

The August 13 incident in Bryndwr left 53-year-old Te Arohanui Pohio dead and her 47-year-old partner critically injured.

A 47-year-old man was charged with possession of an offensive weapon and was summoned to appear in Christchurch District Court on November 13.

"The charge relates to the family harm-related incident which preceded the police shooting," Superintendent Tony Hill said.

Police were called to the house on Clyde Road in Bryndwr after reports that a man with a knife was threatening his partner and himself.

When officers arrived, police said a woman ran out of the house, closely followed by the man with a hunting knife.

Officers fired a single shot, which hit the man, and an officer approached him to provide first aid.

Pohio then picked up the knife and threatened the officers. Police said she was shot after advancing on the officers, having ignored appeals for her to drop the knife.

Despite first aid being administered, the woman died at the scene.

"A critical incident investigation is ongoing in relation to the shooting."
