Lotto: $10 million must be won this weekend

This weekend's $10 million Lotto prize must be won, meaning that regardless of what numbers are drawn, someone will be heading into next week richer.

Saturday's draw comes ahead of a major technology upgrade, which included new in-store features and "simplified" spend limits.

In a must be won draw, if there are no Powerball First Division winners, the jackpot would roll down to the next Powerball division, with the winnings split equally between them.

"Wherever you are in the country, someone has to win," Will Hine, Lotto's head of corporate communications, said.

Lotto encouraged anyone wanting to buy a ticket to get in early to avoid the rush.

"Lotto NZ expects stores to be busy from mid-afternoon on Saturday, and lots of people will also be going online to grab their ticket in the hour before sales close at 7.30pm."

It also warned that some larger stores may be down to just one terminal instead of the usual two due to the technology upgrade, meaning customers may need to queue up.

"Lotto NZ thanks customers for their patience."

"We always encourage people, if they want to buy a ticket, to spend only a little and to only spend what they can afford to from their entertainment budget."

Under the new in-store changes, a single ticket will be printed when Lotto, Powerball and Strike are bought together, meaning triple dips will be on a single ticket.

There would be a screen allowing customers to see what they're buying and an easier way to scan tickets, coupons and MyLotto favourites.

Spend limits would change to a seven-day rolling limit of up to $150 across all games. The lowest limit customers had set would become the default.

Any decrease to limits would take effect immediately, while any increase would activate after 24 hours.

The system upgrade will go live on September 29.
