Police are giving an update following this morning's fatal shooting of Marokopa man Tom Phillips.

He was shot after a police officer was hit by gunfire near the western Waikato town of Piopio.

One of his children was with him at the time and is now receiving care. They were not injured.

Two others remain missing.

Acting Deputy Commissioner Jill Rogers will speak to media in Waitomo from around 3.30pm.
