Man found living in Oregon housing crawl space with bed and TV

A bed, lights, chargers, TVs and other electronics were present in the crawl space.

A man was found allegedly living in a crawl space beneath a housing complex in the US state of Oregon complete with lights, a bed, and a television.

In a statement, the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office said officers responded to investigate a "suspicious circumstance" at a housing complex near Portland at around 11pm on September 3.

"A witness reported seeing a man, who was not known to live in the complex, parking his car and walking to the back of one of the buildings.

"The witness also noticed the door to the crawl space was open and light was coming from inside. The door then closed."

When officers arrived, they found the door damaged and now locked, with an extension cord running through a vent.

After contacting the owner, staff were told nobody was supposed to be down there and no lights should be coming from inside.

"The owner also reported they had heard strange noises coming from the crawl space before."

When the owner's keys did not work, officers forced the door and found 40-year-old Benjamin Bucur inside the crawl space.

Police said the man had taken "significant steps" to improve the condition of the crawl space he was living in.

He had made extensive modifications to the space, turning it into a makeshift living area.

"He had taken significant steps to improve the conditions of the crawl space and was obviously living inside," the sheriff’s office said.

"Deputies observed a bed, lights, chargers, TVs, and other electronics plugged into the house’s power supply."

A pipe with white residue was also found that tested positive for methamphetamine.

Bucur was charged with unlawful possession of meth and burglary.
