A Malaysian national has been jailed for his role in a failed plot to sneak 100kg of methamphetamine into Australia hidden inside leather shoes.
The Australian Federal Police said an investigation was launched in April 2024 after Australian Border Force officers found the drugs inside a consignment that arrived in Sydney from Thailand.
The consignment – concealing AU$92 million (NZ$102.3 million) in methamphetamine – was addressed to a western Sydney storage facility used by a freight forwarder.
The shipment was then linked to a 50-year-old Malaysian national when he attempted to sign for the consignment at his Melbourne address using forged identification.
A search carried out at his home in Burwood days later uncovered two mobile devices and a fake licence provided to the freight forwarder.
He was sentenced to 11 years in prison.
