A New South Wales man has been charged after allegedly leading police on multiple pursuits between Campbelltown and Goulburn with a 7-month-old baby in the front seat.
Around 9.30pm on August 7, officers were travelling south on the Hume Highway at Blair Athol when a sedan sped past travelling at 168km/h on a 110km/h zone.
A pursuit was initiated after the driver failed to stop for police but was called off a short time later due to safety concerns, NSW Police said.
The sedan was found at a service station at Sallys Corner a short time later.
Police again activated their warning lights. The driver failed to stop, and a second pursuit was initiated on the Hume Motorway in Goulburn.
The pursuit continued until the sedan stopped at a service station on Hume St in Goulburn.
"When police approached the car, the driver allegedly locked himself inside the vehicle and refused to open the door to police, causing officers to smash the driver’s side window and arrest him," NSW Police said.
"Officers also found an allegedly unrestrained 7-month-old baby – known to the man – seated in the front passenger seat."
NSW ambulance staff assessed the baby, who appeared to be uninjured. He was taken to Goulburn Base Hospital for monitoring.
The baby is now in his family’s care.
The driver, a 35-year-old man, was taken to Goulburn Police Station where he allegedly tested positive to methylamphetamine, which was sent away for secondary testing.
He was taken Goulburn Hospital for further monitoring.
On release, he was transported back to Goulburn Police station and charged with multiple driving charges and common assault relating to an alleged incident earlier that night.
He was granted conditional bail to appear in Goulburn Local Court today.
