The New South Wales government has shared footage of near-miss incidents on the light rail network and are reminding passengers that rail safety is a matter "as serious as life and death".

The CCTV footage, released to mark the 20th annual Rail Safety Week, shows vehicles and pedestrians making close calls with travelling light rail vehicles in Sydney, the Eastern Suburbs, Parramatta and Newcastle.

One video captured a pedestrian on a mobility scooter crossing directly in front of a moving tram.

Another video captured an oblivious pedestrian stepping out in front of a travelling light rail vehicle, before being pulled back by another pedestrian to avoid being hit.

New South Wales Minister for Transport John Graham said some of the videos were "hard to watch" with some people just "centimetres or miliseconds from the result being much worse."

The morning's headlines in 90 seconds, including dire state of our heart health system, where unspent charter school money might go, and thieves make off with a pricey haul of Labubu dolls. (Source: 1News)

“As we enter Rail Safety Week 2025, it is the right time to remind people that light rail vehicles can’t deviate their path and at 85 tonnes when fully loaded, they take time to stop.

"Please stay alert and follow the rules to ensure your own safety and the people you are with."
