Person dies following two-vehicle crash near Taupō

One person has died following a two-vehicle crash near Taupō this morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene on State Highway 1 in Wairakei, between Link Rd and Kauri Dr, around 7.30am.

"Two people from one vehicle have minor injuries, while the sole occupant of the second vehicle died at the scene," police said.

Hato Hone St John said two people were taken to Taupō Hospital.

The road was closed while the serious crash unit was investigating. It has since reopened.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or may have dashcam footage has been asked to contact police.
