Two bears escape UK wildlife park enclosure to feast on honey

Two brown bears managed to get their paws on a week's worth of honey after escaping from their enclosure at a UK wildlife park in Devon yesterday.

The five-year-old European brown bears – Mish and Lucy – escaped from their enclosure at Wildwood Devon, a conservation charity near Exeter, before swiftly consuming a "week's worth of honey".

The bears – weighing around 180kg each – absconded into an area where enrichment toys and food was stored.

Mark Habben, director of zoological operations at Wildwood Trust, told the BBC emergency procedures were carried out and the public was "not in harm's way".

The park said the bears were "continually monitored" both on the ground and via CCTV until they calmly returned to their enclosure and fell asleep.

"In line with standard protocol, police attended the scene, and an investigation is now underway to determine how the incident occurred," the park said in a statement.

"The bears had a feast, played around, pulled some rope out," said Habben.
