Melbourne police have arrested a man who allegedly drove a stolen four-wheel drive through a shopping centre to evade police yesterday.

Victoria police were alerted to the allegedly stolen vehicle by security at the Northland Shopping Centre in Preston at around 4.02pm (local time) on Wednesday.

Shoppers watched on in disbelief as the vehicle sped through the interior of the shopping centre during the after-school rush.

"It sounded like gunshots," a witness told 9News.

Another witness told 9News she "just heard people yelling and crying".

The car smashed through doors into the mall and was shown on video heading through another set of glass doors at another end.

The vehicle was found abandoned in Beavers Rd in Northcote shortly after 5pm.

Police believed the white Toyota Landcruiser was stolen from a property in Ivanhoe East on June 2.

"Thankfully, no one was struck by the car and there are no reported injuries."

Senior Constable Paul Hogan said investigators arrested a 27-year-old East Melbourne man at around 8.30am (local time) today.

"An electronic key reprogramming tool was seized during the arrest. Police are not looking for anyone else in relation to the incident."
