A manhunt is ongoing in Western Sydney for a detainee who allegedly attacked two border officers with a makeshift weapon during a failed deportation attempt.
The suspect, 28-year-old Tongan national Paea Teu, remains on the run. Authorities have released a photo and CCTV footage in an effort to locate him.
Teu, who had no prior criminal history, was being transported to the airport from Villawood Detention Centre after overstaying his visa. During the transfer, he allegedly attacked two Australian Border Force officers using a sharpened pair of nail clippers fashioned into a weapon.
One of the officers is undergoing surgery, but both are expected to recover.
The incident comes just weeks after the Australian Border Force reduced the number of officers required for detainee transfers from three down to two.
