Selwyn lifts state of emergency as severe weather recovery continues

What you need to know:

  • Large parts of the country were hammered by wild weather on Thursday, as torrential rain and gale-force winds set in.
  • Flooding from heavy rain has led to a state of emergency being declared in Christchurch (including Banks Peninsula). An earlier state of emergency for Selwyn District has been lifted.
  • Winds have eased somewhat in the capital after a red warning was issued for Wellington yesterday.
  • Flights to and from Wellington Airport have resumed, but Cook Strait ferries have been cancelled until Saturday morning
