1 Ninety kilos of meth lands at Auckland Airport in under 12 hours
Customs have seized a combined total of more than 90kg of methamphetamine in bags abandoned from two inbound flights in under 12 hours at Auckland International Airport over the weekend.
The seized methamphetamine was estimated to be worth up to $34 million and could have caused up to $95 million in harm to New Zealand.
2 Budget 2025: $53m to fund teacher registrations, practising certificates
The Government has allocated $53 million in the 2025 Budget to pay for teacher registrations and practising certificates, the Education Minister announced today.
Erica Stanford said the Government has committed funding to cover fees through to 2028, including any increases the Teaching Council may implement through its current fee review.
Stanford acknowledged the vast changes made to the curriculum over the past year, and thanked teachers for their "ongoing hard work, dedication, professionalism and the passion they have for teaching".
3 Police applicants who failed physical test still admitted for training
Police are investigating after three applicants who failed physical testing were still admitted for training.
Police are looking into whether further breaches of the recruitment process had occurred, covering a six-month period.
The investigation would check if new Police College recruits have met required standards, and the findings would be reported publicly.
4 Builders, plumbers, drainlayers to be able to sign off some of their own work
The Government has announced a new scheme to allow some building firms, plumbers and drainlayers to sign off on some of their own work.
It will also set a mandatory target to deal with building inspection wait times.
The opt-in self-certification scheme, with legislation introduced by the end of the year, would allow approved building firms, plumbers, and drainlayers to check their own work on a "simple residential dwelling".
The inspection targets for Building Consent Authorities will come into force later in the year.
