Ram raiders steal $45,000 worth of stuffed animals from UK toy shop

A toy shop in the UK had about $45,000 worth of soft toys stolen after being hit by ram raiders.

The owners of The Gorge Bear Company in Cheddar, Somerset, south of Bristol, said the shop was hit in the early hours of Sunday morning (local time).

Paul Pimlott, the company secretary, told the BBC the robbers rammed into the shop about "eight times" using a wooden post as a "battering ram".

CCTV footage posted by the business on Facebook showed two masked and hooded offenders entering the store, pulling as many toys off the shelves as they could before making off.

The company said around 200 jellycats and 20 Charlie bears were taken in the robbery. The haul was worth around £20,000 (NZ$45,197).

"Seeing it, there's an element of shock of why would people do that?" Pimlott said.

"We've had a lot of phone calls on the day. A father phoned in because her daughter was in tears [because] of what's happened to the shop.

"There's a lot of emotional outpouring because people think it's only a bear, but there's a story behind every bear."

Avon and Somerset Police launched an investigation, and officers searched the area to find the vehicle involved.

Jellycat soft toys have grown in popularity over recent years, with the craze largely fuelled by social media. The official Jellycat TikTok account has amassed tens of millions of likes.

Facebook pages have been set up, largely dedicated to buying and selling rare items.
