UK man eggs-iled from county after nicking $496 worth of Creme Eggs

A man in the United Kingdom has been banned from the ceremonial county of Cambridgeshire after stealing £220.50 (NZ$496) worth of Cadbury Creme Eggs.

On Saturday, March 22, Deon De Groot, aged 26, entered a Tesco Express in Peterborough at about 11.40am and was seen packing the chocolate eggs into a duffle bag, and left without paying.

Shortly after, a member of staff flagged down a passing police car and let them know what had happened.

The car followed De Groot and found a "large amount" of the stolen goods concealed within his jacket.

He had dropped his duffle bag nearby, which when found also contained full boxes of Creme Eggs.

De Groot appeared at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

He was sentenced to 12 weeks prison, suspended for one year, and was banned from entering Cambridgeshire for three months after he admitted to the theft.

Guy Cunningham, the officer who made the arrest, said: "Thanks to the quick reaction by staff who flagged us down, we were able to catch De Groot red-handed and return the stolen items to the store."
