1 No tsunami threat after 6.8 earthquake strikes off lower South Island
The quake struck at 2.43pm and was centred 140km southwest of Tuatapere at a depth of 33km.
A tsunami risk assessment by the National Emergency Management Agency this afternoon found "no land threat is expected".
"Residents of Southland and Fiordland should stay away from beach and marine areas as strong and unusual currents may present a danger."
2 Wellington proposed to lose an electorate at next election
The Ōhāriu, Mana and Ōtaki seats are set to be removed with two new electorates named Kenepuru and Kapiti created instead.
This affects Labour's Greg O'Connor who is the MP for Ōhāriu, Labour's finance spokesperson Barbara Edmonds, MP for Mana, and National MP for Ōtaki Tim Costley.
The proposed changes come as a result of the commission's review into the electorate boundary changes, which are assessed after each census.

Police admitted to misidentifying an 11-year-old girl in Hamilton as a missing 20-year-old mental patient earlier this month.
She was taken to Waikato Hospital where she stayed for almost 12 hours before being reported missing by her mother.
Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora has apologised and launched an investigation into the incident, while Prime Minister Christopher Luxon this morning described it as "incredibly concerning".

The circumstances surrounding the death of 63-year-old Lynne Martin, who was convicted of the murder of her father, have been detailed in a decision released by the Independent Police Conduct Authority (IPCA) today.
It found that Martin's care in custody was initially “appropriate” and in accordance with police obligations.
Police accepted the findings and said an internal investigation came to a similar conclusion.

At his heaviest, Neum Muli’aumaseali’i weighed in at 293.2 kg. In January 2024, the 39-year-old was taken to hospital with sepsis in his blood.
Following a strict regime of diet, exercise and increased water intake, he weighed in on March 22 this year at 188.5kg – more than 100kg lighter than when he began.
