NRL issues Warriors assistant coach with breach notice

Assistant coach Richard Agar at One New Zealand Warriors training session at Mt Smart Stadium in December 2022.

Warriors assistant coach Richard Agar has been issued with a breach notice following an incident with a journalist in Las Vegas earlier this month, the NRL announced today.

The alleged altercation occurred behind the scenes at Allegiant Stadium on March 2 during games played as part of the NRL's annual foray into the American market.

Englishman Agar was in Vegas for the Warriors' clash against Canberra, who dominated the Auckland side for a big 30-8 win.

The journalist was there to cover matches between Super League sides Wigan and Warrington, and the English women's team and Australia.

The NRL breach notice issued on Monday proposed a fine for Agar of NZD$11,000; a suspension of three NRL matches; and a requirement for Agar to undertake education and training.

This suspension would prohibit Agar from performing any duties as Warriors assistant coach on days matches are scheduled, the statement said.

"Further, Agar is prohibited from travelling to any away match scheduled for the Warriors during the period of the suspension."

Agar has five business days to respond to the breach notice.

Agar previously worked with Warriors head coach Andrew Webster on Samoa's coaching staff, and joined the NRL club for the Warriors head coach's first season at the helm in 2023.

Before that, he coached more than 200 Super League games across stints at Hull FC, Wakefield Trinity and Leeds Rhinos.
