A food safety investigation found an incident at a Gisborne intermediate school in which a student received second-degree burns could have been avoided.
New Zealand Food Safety deputy director-general Vincent Arbuckle said today an investigation had found that Compass Group had sourced lunches from a third-party supplier without ensuring the risks and suitability had been assessed before the meals were sent to schools.
The Heinz Watties meal was not at fault and "perfectly safe" for its intended domestic use, the inquiry found.

Residents at a Darlington Rd address called police when an intruder was found inside their home at 2am.
Detective Senior Sergeant Tim Leitch said one occupant received minor injuries following an altercation with the suspect who fled before police arrived.
Police on patrol then found an unconscious and critically injured man near the intersection of Camperdown Rd and Totara Rd at around 2.30am.
