A ride-share driver has been left traumatised after being attacked by a group armed with machetes in Melbourne over the weekend.
DiDi driver Rajneesh – who declined to give his full name for safety concerns – was picking up a customer around 1am on Sunday when three or four men forced their way into his vehicle and began attacking him with machetes, Nine reports.
The 25-year-old sustained deep cuts to his hands and stab wounds to his legs.
Rajneesh attempted to flee the scene with his car keys when one of the men – armed with a knife – gave chase, friend Rahul Jamwal told Nine.
The group fled after a member of the public heard his cries for help.
The driver, who has since undergone three surgeries, was left traumatised by his ordeal.
Doctors told Rajneesh it would take around six to 10 months for him to recover, Jamwal said.
In a statement, DiDi head of external affairs Daniel Jordan told Nine that all ride-share drivers "should feel safe and respected during their time on the platform".
The company has reached out to Rajneesh and will provide him with support, Jordan said.
Police investigating the incident believe the group fled empty-handed.
A GoFundMe has been launched to help pay for Rajneesh’s expenses during his recovery.
