Nine transported to hospital after ammonia leak in Timaru

Nine people were taken to hospital following an ammonia leak in Timaru last night.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand services were called to Meadows Rd in Washdyke around 9.35pm following a report of an ammonia leak.

Fire services responded with five trucks, including a specialist command unit and a hazardous substances unit, a Fire and Emergency spokesperson told 1News.

A St John spokesperson told 1News this morning that nine people were taken to Timaru Hospital by ambulance and health shuttle.

"Three patients were in a moderate condition and six patients were in a minor condition."
