An opossum in the US has gone viral after an incredible culinary feat – passing out after eating an entire chocolate mousse cake.
Nebraska man Hayden Doggett was taking some of his mum’s homemade treats out onto the back deck last Monday when he suddenly slammed the door shut.
An unexpected guest was curled up on his mother Kim Doggett's new couch, a Costco cake on the floor next to it, and muddy paw prints on the upholstery. At first, she didn't believe him.
"I really thought he was messing with me, so I went over, and I turned the light on, I opened the door, and I was like, 'Oh my’," she told CNN. "And then I was like, 'Oh, it ate the Costco cake'. The whole thing almost was sitting on the ground next to the couch."
The "cake bandit" was taken to the Nebraska Wildlife Rehab to be treated for unrelated lead toxicity and her unhealthy diet.
The Nebraska Wildlife Rehab has since designed an Opossum Cake Bandit t-shirt in her honour.
The opossum is expected to make a full recovery before returning to the wild in the next few weeks.
