A youth has been apprehended after they allegedly pulled a gun at an officer and a member of the public in Palmerston North on Tuesday evening.

At around 8.30pm police attempted to take them into custody after they were seen walking to a property on Brentwood Avenue in Highbury. Police said the youth became agitated and pulled out a gun before fleeing on foot.

Police said the suspect was believed to be involved in an earlier incident, where a gun was allegedly pointed at a member of the public while walking on Featherston St.

The officer was being offered support and was not physically injured.

Police said the youth was found at an address on Dublin Street in Whanganui at around 8.10pm yesterday.

"Specialist Police teams deployed immediately, and the suspect was taken into custody without issue about 8.20pm," Inspector Ross Grantham said.

Grantham said there were limited details about the suspect police could provide due to their age, but "charges are being considered".

"We understand the real concern Wednesday night’s incident created in the community, and getting the alleged offender off the street has been a priority for staff in the Central Police District," he said.

"Police staff, both frontline and behind the scenes, have done outstanding work to get this arrest and I hope the community can sleep a little easier tonight."
