1 Waitangi 2025: Luxon speaks at Ōnuku Marae, waka parade at Te Tii

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has responded to criticism over his absence at Waitangi today.

Luxon and Governor-General Dame Cindy Kiro attended commemorations at Ōnuku Marae in Akaroa.

"I've been to Waitangi over the years," he told reporters. "Former prime ministers – whether it's been Helen Clark, John Key, Bill English – haven't come to Waitangi each and every year."

2 Boy who protected sister from plane crash making 'miraculous' recovery

A 10-year-old boy is recovering after protecting his younger sister from the flying debris of a medical transport plane that crashed in the US city of Philadelphia last week.

“Daddy, did I save my sister?" was one of the first things Trey Howard asked his father after he woke up following emergency brain surgery, Andre Howard Jr said.

The father had gone out for donuts with three of his kids when the plane crashed.

3 Evacuations as fire engulfs building with NZ's oldest running cinema

Nearby buildings have been evacuated this afternoon as emergency services tackle a fire in a historic Central Otago building — home to New Zealand's oldest-operating cinema.

Fire and Emergency NZ said it received a call to a fire at the Roxburgh Town Hall around 11.48am.

The cinema opened on December 11, 1897 and could seat 258 people.

An oyster grower has been left devastated following the theft of dozens of his distinctive, high-end oysters – valued at around $60,000.

The gourmet Pacific oysters were nurtured in floating pods and grown in moulds, giving them a distinctively smooth shell branded with a "Q".

5 Woman says she's applied for 400 jobs as unemployment reaches four-year high

According to the latest Stats NZ employment data, unemployment rose to 5.1% in the three months ended December – the highest level since 2020.

Among the 156,000 unemployed are thousands of workers culled in the coalition Government's public sector cuts.

Suzanne George, 35, said she has applied for around 400 jobs in the last 13 months in Wellington. Prior to that, she worked for 12 years in the public sector in various roles.

Ozzy Osbourne will reunite with all of the original members of Black Sabbath for the first time in 20 years, in a gig that will be his last and being billed as the "greatest" heavy metal show ever.

The influential metal band will headline the Back to the Beginning show on July 5 at Villa Park, home of the Aston Villa Football Club in Birmingham, England.
