Missing swimmer's body discovered on Christchurch beach

A man who went missing from a Christchurch beach yesterday has been found dead by a member of the public.

Police were called to the scene in Southshore at about 6am, before a search for the missing swimmer was due to recommence after "challenging" conditions on the water.

Officers received a report that the man's body had been found at the South Bank of Southshore beach, according to a police spokesperson.

"Police extend our sympathies to the family of the deceased at this time," they said.

"His death will be referred to the coroner."

Authorities were first alerted to the missing swimmer at about 3.20pm yesterday.

A search involving a rescue helicopter was carried out for several hours between Southshore Spit and Sumner Beach before being paused overnight.

Conditions on the water were "challenging", a Coastguard spokesperson said yesterday.

"Search conditions are challenging, with overcast weather, a 1-1.2m swell, and poor water visibility. The outgoing tide and wind-driven swell have further complicated efforts."

The first Coastguard Sumner rescue vessel, Hamilton Jet Rescue, was launched at 3.37pm, followed by the Blue Arrow Rescue at 3.55pm, according to the group.

The Ian Dewe jetski had also been involved in the search effort.
