The holiday road toll has risen to four after a person died in a serious crash on State Highway 25 this morning.

Four others sustained minor injuries in the crash between Thames and Coromandel.

Emergency services were called to the scene, between Te Puru Creek Rd and Valder Place, just before 9am. Two cars were involved in the crash, according to police.

In an update this afternoon, police said State Highway 25 between Thames and Coromandel has reopened, but warned motorists of "lengthy delays".

"Police thank motorists for their patience travelling on both SH25a and SH25, as there may be lengthy delays clearing the backlog of traffic.

Police said inquiries into the circumstances of the crash were ongoing.
