Auckland Hearts' Izzy Gaze appeals for an LBW at the Northern Brave Women v Auckland Hearts.

New Zealand's domestic T20 competitions got underway with a whimper yesterday as rain interrupted the opening matches of the season.

The Northern Brave hosted the Auckland Aces and Auckland Hearts for a double-header at Seddon Park in Hamilton, until rain halted proceedings.

In the early game, which did see some cricket played, the Hearts were on top as they tore through the Brave's batting lineup to leave them at 67-7 after 12 overs.

The Hearts struck early as Bree Illing (2-17) took a wicket in the second over, bowling out Brave opener and captain Jess Watkin for five runs.

White Fern Fran Jonas (2-13) also impressed with the ball in the first game of the new season.

The innings was paused on multiple occasions for rain delay and a revised 12-over match was set, but the match was ultimately was abandoned at 4.30pm.

The men's game between the Brave and Aces was called off without a ball being bowled.

The Aces are the defending champions of the men's Super Smash, while the Wellington Blaze are the defending champions of the women's Super Smash.

Next up for the Brave are the Wellington Firebirds and Blaze who they host on New Year's Day, while the Aces and Hearts travel to play the Otago Volts and Sparks in Alexandra on Sunday.

The Super Smash continues today with the Sparks hosting the Canterbury Magicians at 12.40pm followed by the Volts taking on the Canterbury Kings at 4.25pm.
