A man has been critically injured following a spearfishing incident in Mahurangi, north of Auckland, this afternoon.

Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopters were alerted to the incident around 4.26pm.

"A winch extraction of the patient was required due to access and incoming tide," an Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust spokesperson told 1News.

The man was airlifted to Auckland City Hospital in a critical condition.
