1 First arrests under gang patch ban made in Auckland, Hawke's Bay

Police Minister Mark Mitchell said gang members were arrested in Wairoa and Papakura today for wearing patches in public.

"There is a very simple message to gang members worried about police having the ability to lock them up or search their home; comply with the legislation."

Police Commissioner Richard Chambers told Breakfast his staff stopped a vehicle displaying gang insignia on its dashboard in Hastings just three minutes after midnight, when the law came into effect.

2 Security guard stabbed in neck in Auckland's Newmarket

A man has been arrested after allegedly stabbing a security guard in the neck outside a luxury store in Auckland's Newmarket this afternoon.

Detective Senior Sergeant Martin Friend said security guards approached a man when he produced a knife.

"One of the guards has sustained a serious stab injury to the neck as a result."

A 24-year-old man is in police custody and charges will be laid in due course.

3 Olivia Podmore: Inquest hears from psychologist, GP

An inquest into the suspected suicide of Olivia Podmore has heard she was burned out by exhaustion and presenting as having severe anxiety and depression three months before her death.

There was also no mental health support put in place for the elite sprint cyclist while her usual practitioners were at the Tokyo Olympics in August 2021.

The 24-year-old died on August 9, 2021, the day after the conclusion of the Olympics, which she wasn't selected for.

4 Fatal police shooting of Kaoss Price was 'unjustified' — IPCA report

Kaoss Price, 22, was fatally shot by police on the evening of April 16 in 2022 after ramming a police vehicle and attempting to hijack a member of the public's car north of New Plymouth.

A police watchdog report has now found the officer was justified in arming himself but could have used a taser in the final confrontation. The officer was justified in shooting at Price on two earlier occasions.

Kaoss' grandmother Margaret Kennard welcomed the ruling of the shooting as "unjustified" but felt a lack of charges was "not good enough".

5 Video shows gun being wrested off man during Auckland incident

Footage shows a black car driving erratically in a grass reserve, before a person approached the vehicle, appearing to reach into the driver-side window. A rifle could then be seen being pulled out of the car and thrown into nearby bushes.

The incident began just after 7.30pm last night as police detected a car being driven at "excessive speed" on the Southern Motorway, near East Tāmaki.

A 31-year-old Head Hunters gang associate now faces several charges over the "extremely dangerous" incident which ended in Glen Innes, according to police.
