NZ Breakers have confirmed the departure of American centre Freddie Gillespie to pursue a professional contract offshore.

Gillespie's departure appeared imminent over the weekend, amid rumours he was being courted by Olimpia Milano in the Italian Lega A Basket.

As his team celebrated a gritty road win over Cairns Taipans, returning to the top of the Aussie NBL table, lingering hugs betrayed players' mixed emotions at losing a teammate.

Even coach Petteri Koponen seemed misty eyed, as he refused to comment on the speculation afterwards.

"Freddie approached us and requested a release," confirmed Breakers chief executive Lisa Edser. "While bittersweet, it was an opportunity that Freddie wanted to pursue and we support him.

"We look forward to watching his success in the future. We thank Freddie for his contributions to the club on and off the court, and wish him the best with his new team."

Gillespie led the competition in blocked shots and was at the heart of the league-best Breakers defence, but was also suspended for a game, after a headbutt in the pre-season.

"I’ve built great and lasting relationships with my teammates, the Breakers staff and our incredible fans," he said. "I’m truly proud of everything we’ve accomplished together this season.

"As I look ahead, I’m excited to begin the next chapter of my journey."

The ANBL has a two-week hiatus for the FIBA international window and the Breakers promise to have a replacement installed for their next game against Illawarra Hawks on November 28.

In truth, they've had one lurking in the wings for a month, with former NBA cult hero Tacko Fall joining the squad during their three-game US swing. He returned to New Zealand with the team, already hinting at an eventual call-up.

At 2.29m (7ft 6in), Fall would be the tallest player to pull on a Breakers singlet.
