Kiwi Kyle Smith has finished runner-up in the inaugural T100 triathlon world tour, after a fourth-place performance at the series finale at Dubai.

Smith, 27, was edged off the podium by twice Olympic sprint champion Alistair Brownlee with a kilometre left in the final run stage, but had accumulated points through a campaign that saw him place second at San Francisco and London in his previous two starts.

Brownlee tripped as he was about to pass his rival, but regathered himself and reeled in Smith, who was flagging towards the end.

The T100 format is contested over a 2km swim, 80km cycle and 18km run.

The Dubai event was taken out by Belgian Marten van Riel, 22 seconds ahead of German Rico Bogen, with Brownlee more than a minute behind. Van Riel also captured the series crown, with victories at San Francisco and Ibiza.

American Taylor Knibb won the women's race to seal the overall crown from Aussie Ashleigh Gentle.
