2 IRD ends controversial social media data-sharing practice

The Inland Revenue Department is stopping the use of custom audience lists with social media platforms amid public concern at the practice.

Custom audience lists - which IRD asserted involved anonymising personal information - were used by the department for a decade with platforms such as Facebook and Google as one way to provide important updates to taxpayers.

Two instances of customer details being supplied in their raw form by Inland Revenue to a social media platform were discovered in the review.

3 Person sought after fire 'deliberately lit' at Auckland mosque

Emergency services were called to the mosque on Astley Ave in New Lynn at around 9am following a report of a fire, Detective Inspector Callum McNeill said.

CCTV shows a person allegedly breaking into the building just before 1am and lighting the fire.

The fire continued to smoulder "until just after 9am when it became visible and emergency services were called".

4 Gisborne vessel capsize: Paramedic winched to unconscious boatie

A number of emergency service agencies responded at 9.20am to the effort off Tuamotu Island after a boat capsized.

"One patient in a moderate condition is currently being airlifted to Gisborne Hospital. Two further patients, both in minor conditions, were assessed and treated at the scene, no transport required," a St John spokesperson said.

5 Southern council cars clocked speeding 1400 times in six months

Across Gore, Southland and Invercargill City councils have released information on speeding in council cars showing that limits were exceeded by at least 10km/h more than 1400 times.

One Gore District Council worker clocked at 145km/h and may never be identified because the system did not log the person behind the wheel.

FIREWORKS IGNITE IN RECYCLED CARDBOARD TRUCK

Whangārei District Council's parks and recreation department field officer Grant Alsop told 1News that staff first noticed smoke coming from the back of their cardboard recycling truck in Whangaumu Bay yesterday afternoon.

He said there were still fireworks "going off" inside the truck when they tipped out the load onto the gravel.

"If they hadn't noticed the smoke, things could have been a lot worse and its not just a danger to our staff but other people in the community too."
