A new Indian-backed basketball franchise is set to feature teams in the NZNBL and Tauihi competitions in New Zealand.

The Indian Panthers will be based in South Auckland and play their matches at Takanini's Pulman Arena.

The two sides are set to include Indian national team players, along with internationals from America and Australia. They are also allowed to sign Kiwi players.

Sky's head of commercialisation and fandom Justin Nelson developed the project and said the addition of the Panthers would help expose the Kiwi leagues to a new audience.

"This is an exciting moment for New Zealand basketball," said Nelson.

"By embracing the most populated nation in the world, we're opening our leagues to up to 1.4 billion potential new fans.

"We're also supporting India's basketball ambitions by sharing access to our two rising pro leagues."

The 2025 NBL schedule is set to be released in the coming weeks.
