Torrential rain failed to dampen spirits as King Charles and Queen Camilla made a final stop in the village of Siumu, to thank their hosts, before departing Samoa following the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.

The King and Queen participated in a traditional ava ceremony, deeply rooted in Samoan culture, with Charles receiving an honorary title from the village.

For paramount chief Tofaeono Mealofa Salamasina, whose parents witnessed Queen Elizabeth's visit in 1977, the occasion held special significance.

"Now the King comes here and I am as a paramount chief. It's a great opportunity and also an experience because this is the land of the kings - the great forefathers," she said.

The village's six-month campaign to be included in the royal itinerary proved successful, with local leaders anticipating long-term benefits from the visit.

King Charles expressed gratitude for his hosts at the ceremony.

He said: "Thank you for these wonderful gifts and for bestowing this particular title on me.

"I shall always remain devoted to this part of the world and I hope that I survive long enough to come back again to see you all. Thank you."

For 29-year-old Siumu matai Vitualagi Fetu Leopai-Saili, the royal visit was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

"I am a mother of two boys and a young matai from Siumu. We never thought, never dreamed, would be able to witness the King with my own eyes," she said.
