The White Ferns have been beaten comfortably in their first ODI against India, losing by 59 runs in Ahmedabad.

Off the back of winning the T20 World Cup on Monday morning (NZT), they quickly had to shift their focus to the three-match ODI series in India.

India won the toss and elected to bat, putting up a total of 227 from 44.3 overs.

When India were 91-4 after 15.1 overs, the White Ferns looked like they might get a foothold in the match, but a 61-run partnership between Jemimah Rodrigues (35) and Tejal Hasabnis (42) helped India retake control.

Melie Kerr continued her dominance with the ball taking 4-42 from her nine overs. Jess Kerr also had a fine performance with the ball taking three wickets and finishing with 3-49.

However, Melie Kerr picked up a quad-strain and had to bat down the order at nine. Despite her injury, she still managed to score 25 off 23 balls.

It was a rough start for the White Ferns, losing Suzie Bates in the second over for just one run, while captain Sophie Devine was run-out for two.

Brooke Halliday high scored for the White Ferns with 39, but couldn't form any consistent partnerships with her teammates in the middle order. Maddy Green (31), Lauren Down (26), and Georgia Plimmer (25) were the next best scorers.

India took two wickets at the end of the 41st over to dismiss the White Ferns for 168.

Devine said after the match that the team were happy they could restrict India to a total of 227.

"We were really confident at the innings break, we had targets set, but when you lose wickets consistently it makes things pretty tricky," Devine said.

"Despite Melie's best efforts, we just lost wickets too regularly."

The White Ferns are ranked fifth in the world in ODI cricket, with India ranked third.

The second match of the ODI series is on Sunday in Ahmedabad.
