A woman in Australia has been rescued after she was trapped upside down between two boulders in New South Wales for seven hours.

NSW Ambulance posted about the ordeal on Facebook, saying it occurred "earlier this month in the Hunter Valley".

The woman slipped intro a three-metre deep crevice and got wedged between the boulders "while trying to retrieve her phone".

She was with friends, who unsuccessfully tried to free her before calling for help.

"The patient was hanging by her feet upside down for over an hour by this point."

"In my 10 years as a rescue paramedic I had never encountered a job quite like this," specialist rescue paramedic Peter Watts said.

The woman was trying to retrieve her phone when she slipped into the crevice.

Several boulders were removed before both of the woman's feet became "accessible".

"The team faced the challenge of navigating the patient out through a tight 'S' bend over the course of an hour."

One of the "massive" boulders was 500kg, the service added.

"The patient was safely freed seven hours after her ordeal began with only minor scratches and bruises."

She didn't retrieve her phone, NSW Ambulance noted.
