American star Ben Shelton confirms return to ASB Classic

Another big name is heading to New Zealand for next year's ASB Classic with rising star Ben Shelton joining the growing stellar cast.

Shelton, 22, made the Australian Open quarter-finals and US Open semi-finals in just his second year of professional tennis.

He broke the record for fastest ever serve at Wimbledon in July, with a 246km/h effort against South African Lloyd Harris.

"I love that I've been able to play Auckland every year, I think they've got great fans and people there," he told 1News.

The world No. 23 returns to the City of Sails with his reputation, and ranking, rising fast.

"This year, I really established myself as a consistent player on tour, someone who's competing and winning matches week in and week out," Shelton said.

He is part of the best batch of men's American players - with the likes of Francis Tiafoe, Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul, and Sebastian Korda - since the success of Andy Roddick, and the glory days of the Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi rivalry.

Naomi Osaka in action at French Open.

Tournament director Nicolas Lamperin said the United States have eight players in the top 50.

"It's the most they've had in a very long time."

The announcement comes off the back of female stars Lulu Sun and Naomi Osaka confirming their returns to Stanley St.

Osaka will miss the rest of the tennis season with a back injury, but Lamperin said he is confident she will be back in time for the tournament.

"I think it's actually going to work in our favour," he said.

"It's her first year back on tour after giving birth last year, I think it'll allow her to have a longer off-season and be fully ready by 2025 when she comes to Auckland."
