Toxic foam coats surface of sacred river in India

October 21, 2024

A sacred river in India has been coated in a toxic foam, believed to be made up of sewage and other pollutants.

Footage shows the Yamuna river in Delhi was blanketed in the froth.

The foam appeared as recent Air Quality Index (AQI) readings in the Indian capital sparked fresh concern over pollution in the area.

India Today reported the river was "already burdened by high levels of pollution", but it becomes worse during the post-monsoon months of October and November.

While monsoon rains dilute the pollutants temporarily, they froth and resurface once water levels decrease again, the news outlet reported.

The river has religious significance for Hindus; it is one of the country's most sacred rivers.
