White Ferns win the T20 Cricket World Cup, Liam Lawson finishes in top-10 in the US Grand Prix, and Donald Trump works at a McDonald's.
1 White Ferns celebrate historic T20 World Cup win over South Africa
The Kiwi women entered the tournament on a 10-game losing streak in the shortest format, finally breaking that slump with a warm-up win over the Proteas, before toppling India in their opening fixture.
Suzie Bates said the team did not have any expectations initially, which she thinks "really helped".
"It's one of those fairy tale stories, where everyone else is doubting you, but we still managed to maintain a little bit of belief that got bigger and bigger as the tournament went on."
2 Lawson makes presence felt with top-10 finish at US Grand Prix
The 22-year-old came from the back of the grid to grab championship points at the United States Grand Prix in Texas.
Lawson improved from 19th to ninth, matching his best F1 finish in his first start as Australian Daniel Ricciardo's replacement in the Red Bull development team.
"Holy s***, how did we do that," Lawson told his team. "Good job, thank you everybody."
3 Temperatures likely to hit mid-20s in eastern parts of New Zealand this week
MetService meteorologist Dom Barry said thanks to warmer air, many places across the east of the country will see higher than average maximum and minimum temperatures.
"For the easternmost places like Christchurch, Oamaru, Napier and Hastings, maximums in the mid-twenties can be expected," Barry said.
On Wednesday afternoon, the temperature in Christchurch is expected to reach 26C, while in the north Napier is likely to see 24C.
4 Golriz Ghahraman's appeal over shoplifting convictions fails
In March this year, Ghahraman pleaded guilty to four counts of shoplifting. The charges related to three incidents in Auckland and one in Wellington late last year.
The items taken were worth about $8900 in total.
In June, the ex-MP's application to be discharged without conviction was denied by Auckland District Court Judge June Jelaš. She appealed that decision, which was then denied today.
5 Trump visits McDonald's after claiming Harris didn't work there in college
The former US president manned the fry station at a Pennsylvania McDonald's before staging an impromptu news conference, answering questions from reporters through the drive-thru window.
The visit came as he stepped up his criticism of Democrat Kamala Harris and dug into his claim — spread without offering evidence — that she never worked at the fast-food chain while in college — an experience she has cited during her campaign.
ONE 'GAME-CHANGING' DEBUT
New Zealand’s newest professional sports team roared (forgive the pun) into life on Saturday, defeating Brisbane 2-0 in their maiden A-Leagues match in front of a raucous crowd of 24,000 freshly minted fans.
It was the perfect start for a club that clearly wishes to be more than mediocre, writes 1News sport presenter Scotty Stevenson.
ONE HEALTH SCARE
In a column for the Sunday Times, Jeremy Clarkson wrote that he had to be taken to hospital before he had a stent fitted to open up a blocked artery.
"It wasn’t especially painful. Just odd," he said.
