1 Poll: 40% say the country in 'worse' shape than before election

According to a new 1News Verian poll, 40% of those surveyed said the country is in worse shape than before the election.

Thirty per cent believe the country is in better shape than before, while 26% said there was no difference a year since Labour was evicted from the Beehive by voters. Former PM Sir John Key and former Labour minister Michael Wood reacted to the results.

2 Thunder, hail possible for much of the North Island

It's a wet and windy start to the week for much of the country, with wind gusts of up to 90km/h on the cards for the upper North Island this evening.

It comes after a low-pressure system centred west of Taranaki, with especially persistent and heavy rain for the south coast of the North Island, according to MetService.

Five people – including a teenager – have been arrested following an alleged kidnapping attempt at a home in Auckland overnight.

Police were called to the scene in the suburb of Epsom, after receiving a report a group of armed men were "trying to force their way into a home".

CCTV has captured the moment a truck tyre exploded on Saturday, prompting residents to run to safety from flying debris.

A witness told 1News the truck started "playing up" and began to let out smoke from the back of the cab. The driver pulled over and called fire services, but the truck was quickly engulfed in flames before they arrived.
