Black Caps fast bowler Ben Sears has been ruled out of the three Test series against India, which starts tomorrow.
Scans revealed a meniscus tear in Sears' left knee, meaning uncapped Otago bowler Jacob Duffy has been called into the side.
Duffy has featured in six ODIs and 14 T20Is for the Black Caps. Currently, he has 299 first-class wickets to his name.
It's New Zealand's first time in India since last year's T20 Cricket World Cup, but they say recent subcontinent experience will help, despite losing that Sri Lanka series two-nil.
A plan on Sears' best course of treatment and rehabilitation will be advised in due course, according to New Zealand Cricket.
Black Caps head coach Gary Stead said he was hopeful Sears would make a fast recovery.
"We're obviously disappointed for Ben who made a strong start to his Test career during the home summer and offers a genuine pace option," Stead said.
"It remains to be seen how long we'll be without him for, but we're hopeful his road to a full recovery will be a short one."
However, Stead added it's an "exciting opportunity" for Duffy, who has been around the Test squad before.
"With three Tests ahead of us he has every chance of making his Test debut.
"Jacob's recent experience playing for Nottinghamshire in the County Championship certainly pushed his place.
"His performances in white-ball cricket for the Black Caps have always been impressive and we're confident he'll be able to contribute if called upon."
