Former Japan international Hiroki Sakai has been named captain of Auckland FC ahead of the club's first A-League match on Saturday.
Defender Sakai, who represented his country at three World Cups and played for French giants Marseille, will have Jake Brimmer and Tommy Smith as his vice-captains.
"I understand the responsibility and pride that comes with being captain of this team," 34-year-old Sakai said.
"I'm excited to lead Auckland FC and work with such a talented and committed squad, including Jake and Tommy, who will play crucial roles in guiding us through the season."
Auckland FC open their campaign against Brisbane Roar at home at Go Media Mt Smart stadium on Saturday.
