Warning to holidaymakers after man allegedly targets empty homes

A husband was found not guilty after an attack in December 2013, however a 2022 decision ruled he must pay his ex-wife over $1 million in damages.

Police have issued a warning to those planning to go on vacation after a man was arrested following a spate of burglaries of holidaymakers' homes.

Police said the series of burglaries, linked to the same offender, took place between July and October, predominantly in Christchurch's hill suburbs.

"In each case, the burglaries took place in homes that were temporarily unoccupied, often while the occupants were on holiday," police said.

A 39-year-old man was arrested and currently faces five charges of burglary. Enquiries are ongoing to establish links to other offences, police added.

Police said the arrest was a reminder for anyone leaving their property unattended for a period of time to take steps to make sure it's safe.

"Burglars are largely opportunistic," police said.

Police encouraged people to install alarms to discourage burglars who are looking for easy entry.

"Locks on windows and doors can be effective, as well as security signage, CCTV, alarms and sensor lights."

Vacationers were also warned to be wary of posting too much information on social media about holiday or travel plans, as well as photos from inside their homes.

"This can make your property a vulnerable target while you’re away."

It was also important to stay in contact with neighbours, and important to communicate anything unusual, police continued.

"Call police straight away on 111 if you see or suspect anything suspicious at your home or a neighbour’s," police said.

"When reporting activity, it’s helpful to take note of the number of people, clothing they wear, and any vehicles present."
