About 40 firefighters have put out a blaze at the Riwaka Hotel in Tasman which is likely to have caused "significant damage" late last night.
A Fire and Emergency spokesperson told 1News that FENZ was alerted to the fire just before 10.30pm, with multiple crews from around the Tasman area responding.
At its peak there were approximately 40 firefighters at the scene, FENZ said.
It was not a large fire, but it was well established near the front of the building, the spokesperson said.
There were people staying in the hotel at the time of the fire, who chose to evacuate, FENZ said.
The spokesperson also said there would be "significant damage", including water damage.
FENZ left the scene around 2am, and a fire investigator would attend the scene this morning to determine the cause.
