John McOviney, the grandfather of one of the witnesses, said the sighting took place on Waikato's west coast, around 3km south of Marakopa.

Footage of Tom Phillips and children released, victim of Wellington assault dies, and a Bluebridge ferry bumps into Picton wharf.

1 Footage of Tom Phillips, children released after fresh sighting

Footage of the sighting sent to 1News shows Phillips and Jayda, 11, Maverick, nine, and Ember, eight, tramping behind their father, who was carrying a rifle. It was the first time the children had been seen since going missing two years, nine months and twenty-six days ago.

John McOviney, the grandfather of one of the witnesses, said his grandson "clicked onto it" and recalled the children going missing with their father.

"You don't see many adults with three kids walking around with packs on their back in the Marokopa area without joining the dots, do you?"

Detective Inspector Andrew Saunders said about the encounter: "This is the first time all three of the children have been sighted, which is positive information, and we know it will be reassuring for the children's wider family."

3 Dunedin student party death 'likely preventable' - coroner

Last weekend marked five years since 19-year-old Sophia Crestani died in a crush on a stairwell at the out of control party held at a Dunedin flat on October 5, 2019.

Coroner Heather McKenzie found Crestani’s death was a “tragic accident", however "likely preventable".

"Because active oversight of the party by the tenants, or any guest phoning Police if they had become aware of what was happening, might have led to it being controlled or shut down earlier before it became a critical crush situation," she said.

There was no damage to the ship but a fender attached to the wharf required repairs.

This is the second incident involving the Connemara in less than a month.

It needed to be towed back to Wellington late last month after it lost power and started drifting in the Cook Strait.

5 Luxon welcomes HMNZS Manawanui crew and passengers back to NZ

The HMNZS Manawanui, a specialist dive and hydrographic vessel worth $100m, sank early Sunday morning after it ran aground on a reef off the coast of the Samoan island of Upolu and caught fire.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said it was "pretty emotional" to welcome home the HMNZS Manawanui crew last night, and said attention would now turn to the mammoth clean-up effort.

"It was a real privilege to be able to talk to them because they've been through a pretty harrowing experience. You know, in really rough sea, they had to abandon [the] ship, get into small boats, navigate a reef, some got capsized."
